Building Client Trust as a Hairdresser: A Simple 3-Step Framework
I hate the phrase "fake it till you make it" mainly because if you don't have the actual skill or knowledge, faking it can lead to a real mess. But when it comes to building confidence as a hairdresser, a little acting is necessary. Acting confident until you feel it helps build your actual confidence. Clients are attracted to professionals who act confidently. And confident hairdressers gain the trust of their clients.
Gaining client trust is key to client retention and a lasting professional relationship. Once our clients trust us, they will listen to our professional opinion and feel more relaxed during their appointment. They will willingly rebook future appointments, tell their friends about us and become walking advertisements for our business.
But how do we do this? Especially when we're just starting our careers and lacking the confidence required to build trust? Or what if we're starting over in a new place with zero clients and no reputation to lean on? (I've rebuilt my clientele from scratch multiple times in my career. You can read about The Most Underrated Growth Strategies For Stylists here.)
I've been a hairdresser since 1997, and I've used this exact framework every time I’ve rebuilt my clientele - when moving to new states, when moving to new salons, and when opening my own salon in 2018. It works because it's based on actions you can take today, regardless of your experience level.
How to Build Client Trust as a Hairdresser: The 3-Part Framework
Here's how to build client trust as a hairdresser, even when you're just starting out or rebuilding your clientele from scratch.
We start with professionalism, because this is the one thing we have control over and can do over and over again. From there, we begin to build confidence, which helps attract clients to us because people want to go to a professional who seems secure and confident in their skill and knowledge. From there we begin gaining our clients' trust and therefore their loyalty. I think of it as a loop: Professionalism → Confidence → Trust. Let's break down the parts of this loop and how to bring each piece into your business.
Step 1: Start with Professionalism
Professionalism is where confidence begins. It's a magical tool, because simply embodying a professional hairstylist will make you appear confident, even if you don't feel it.
The biggest mistake new hairstylists make is skipping straight to trying to appear confident without the professional foundation. Start with what you can control: your professionalism.
What Professional Hairstylist Behavior Looks Like
Arriving to work early to set up for your day
Being on time, and up front waiting for your clients
Greeting your clients warmly and with eye contact
Dressing nicely for work (not messy or sloppy)
Having your hair and makeup done
Having a clean, organized station
Listening attentively during their appointment (it's about them, not you)
Rebooking their future appointment
Writing post-appointment notes so you remember
Following up after their appointment to make sure they are satisfied
You'll notice this list is all things you can DO. Even if you feel unsure of yourself, you can still actively do everything on this list. By doing these things, you are acting like a professional. Professionalism looks confident, therefore you appear confident when you're acting professionally.
Step 2: Build Your Confidence Behind the Chair
When you're consistently acting professionally, your confidence will start to build. These professional habits create a foundation for building client loyalty over time. You will start experiencing wins, like clients rebooking, calling and requesting you, leaving positive reviews about you. These experiences provide feedback that you're doing something right, and your confidence will grow. You can also practice confident behaviors until they become second nature.
Confident Hairstylist Behaviors That Build Trust
Remembering details about their hair from their last appointment (did you make a change? Did they want to try a new style this time?)
Sitting comfortably face to face during the consultation and listening actively to their problems and requests
Offering solutions to problems they are experiencing with their hair
Giving a shampoo that feels purposeful and relaxing
Talking about the products you are using and explaining their benefit
Sharing how to style their hair and showing them how to recreate the look at home
Proactively rebooking their future appointment
Offering them the products you used during checkout
Put yourself in the place of the client and think about what it would feel like during this appointment. You want your client to feel taken care of and trust that you know what you're doing.
Step 3: Earn Client Trust and Loyalty
When you start with professionalism, then act confidently, you'll build lasting client trust. Professionalism and confidence are both required for strong client retention.
How long does it take to build client trust? It happens gradually, appointment by appointment. New stylists shouldn't expect overnight results. Trust develops over multiple visits as clients experience your consistency and care. Some clients will trust you quickly, others will take longer. The key is showing up professionally every single time.
Signs Your Clients Trust You
They ask for your advice and opinion
They take direction from you
They listen to and value your opinions
They willingly rebook future appointments before leaving
They want hair care products that you recommend
They have flexibility with your behind-the-chair schedule
They continue to pay your prices as they increase
They respect your boundaries
They feel relaxed during their appointment and it's enjoyable for both of you
Your professionalism is going to show up daily because you can make that happen. Your confidence is going to grow over time. And trust is going to develop between you and your clients as you continue to work with them and develop more confidence.
Why Client Trust Matters for Your Hairstyling Career
Once we gain the trust of our clients and improve client retention, we begin to grow our career in meaningful ways:
We can confidently and regularly increase our service prices
We can work fewer hours while still meeting our profit goals
We can work a schedule that suits our life
We can eliminate services that we dislike doing
We can specialize in what we love the most
Most importantly, we will love coming to work. We will know our clients, know what to expect from our days, and look forward to seeing them. We will experience longevity in our careers because we have tailored them to fit our specific goals and are working with a group of clients who have said yes to exactly what we're offering.
Building client trust as a hairdresser doesn't happen overnight, but it does happen consistently when you show up professionally every single day. Start with the behaviors you can control, practice confidence until it feels natural, and watch as your client relationships deepen into long-term loyalty.
